Starting March 5, 2025, European nationals will be able to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. From April 2, 2025, this digital travel permit will become mandatory for eligible European travelers visiting the UK.
This marks a significant expansion of the UK’s ETA program, which was successfully introduced to non-European nationals last year. Visitors from countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia are already required to obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK. To date, nearly 1.1 million ETAs have been issued, paving the way for smoother and more efficient travel for short-term visitors.
A Step Forward in Border Security
Seema Malhotra, the UK’s Minister for Migration and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating:
“Securing our borders is a foundation of the UK government’s Plan for Change. By digitising the immigration system, we are paving the way for a contactless UK border, ensuring visitors enjoy a seamless travel experience in the future. Expanding ETA worldwide cements our commitment to enhance security through technology and innovation.”
What Is an ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a pre-approved digital permission that allows eligible travelers to visit or transit through the UK without requiring a visa. It is part of the UK government’s broader strategy to modernize and digitize its border and immigration systems.
Once fully implemented, the ETA will apply to all nationalities who do not require a visa for short stays and who do not hold any other UK immigration status. This includes European travelers.
The ETA is linked directly to the traveler’s passport and enables the UK government to conduct thorough security checks before the individual begins their journey. This system is designed to prevent misuse of the immigration process while maintaining ease of travel for legitimate visitors.
How to Apply for an ETA
The application process for an ETA is designed to be quick and straightforward. Travelers can apply via the UK ETA app or through the official GOV.UK website if they don’t have access to a smartphone.
Applicants will need to provide basic biographic and biometric details, as well as answer questions related to suitability and criminal history. Decisions are typically made within minutes for most applicants, although it’s advised to apply up to three working days in advance in case additional review is required.
The cost of an ETA is £10, and it allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time over a two-year period, or until the applicant’s passport expires—whichever comes first.
It’s important to note that an ETA is not a visa. It is a digital travel authorization, and there is no right to appeal if an application is denied. Travelers who are refused an ETA may still apply for a standard visitor visa, which involves a more detailed review of their circumstances.

The UK government is working closely with airlines, ferry operators, and rail companies to ensure the smooth implementation of these new requirements. The aim is to minimize disruptions for travelers while enhancing border security.
