Cisco Unveils Ambitious Plan to Upskill 1.5 Million Europeans in Critical Digital Technologies by 2030

In a landmark initiative aligned with the European Commission’s digital agenda, Cisco has committed to training 1.5 million EU citizens in foundational digital competencies by 2030. Announced at the European Employment and Social Rights Forum in Brussels, the program targets emerging skill gaps in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, data science, and IoT – critical domains for Europe’s transition to a digital-first economy.

Strategic Workforce Development
The initiative leverages Cisco’s Networking Academy, a 26-year-old digital education platform that has already certified over 3.2 million EU learners. The expanded curriculum will now include:

  • AI fundamentals and ethical implementation
  • Cybersecurity threat mitigation strategies
  • Data analytics and IoT system integration
  • Digital infrastructure optimization

Executive Vision
“Europe’s competitive edge in the AI era depends on strategic human capital development,” emphasized Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins. “Through public-private collaboration, we’re building a future-ready workforce equipped to drive innovation across industries while safeguarding digital ecosystems.”

Education Ecosystem Reinforcement
A dual-pronged approach will:

  1. Democratize Access: Offer free multilingual courses through partnerships with 700+ EU educational institutions
  2. Strengthen Instruction: Train 5,000 educators over five years in next-gen technologies through:
    • AI curriculum development workshops
    • Cybersecurity simulation platforms
    • Industry-aligned digital transformation modules

Sector-Specific Upskilling
The program introduces specialized tracks for key industries:

  • Manufacturing: Industrial network automation
  • Automotive: Connected vehicle infrastructure
  • Energy: Smart grid cybersecurity

Alignment with EU Digital Decade Goals
This investment directly supports the European Commission’s targets for:

  • 80% population digital literacy by 2030
  • 20 million ICT specialist workforce expansion
  • Cross-border digital education standardization

With localized content in 24 EU languages and adaptive learning pathways, Cisco’s initiative aims to bridge both geographic and socioeconomic divides in digital skills access. The program’s success metrics will focus on employment outcomes, with particular emphasis on supporting workforce transitions in traditional industries facing automation challenges.
